St. John School students participate in Red Ribbon Week to encourage a drug-free lifestyle. One of the themes during the week was “Drugs and I Don’t Mix,” where students wore clothes “that just do not go together” to show that drugs and students don’t go together.

St. John School Participates in Red Ribbon Week
St. John School students recently celebrated Red Ribbon Week to encourage a drug-free lifestyle and to strengthen students’ abilities to stay away from drugs. Red Ribbon Week is a nationally recognized school event that occurs during October.
St. John School celebrated through different themes each day of the week, including daily dress up days that highlighted concepts such as, “Put a Cap on Drugs,” “Drugs and I Don’t Mix,” and “Use Your Head, Don’t Do Drugs,” and “Join the Fight Against Drugs.”
Throughout the week, teachers discussed with students the effects of poor choices.
St. John School, established in 1912, offers pre-k through 8 th grade education to students of all religious faiths. For the past three years, students have scored in the 97th percentile on the nationally administered Iowa Test of Basic Skills. St. John School offers instruction in core curriculum as well as music, art, Spanish, drama, photography, advanced computers, and more. In addition, each grade completes a community service project during the school year.

St. John School Students Earn High Marks in 2008-09 School Year
During the St. John School graduation and awards ceremony, the school honored the 8 th grade graduates and recognized many students throughout all the grades for excellence in academic and athletic achievements.
Students graduating from 8 th grade are: Sean B, Jasmine D, Patrick G, Kathleen H, Kathleen K, Natalie K, Susana M, Ryan M, Austin R, Caden R, John Ta, and Andrea Z
Each year, all eighth grade students participate in the ACT EXPLORE program, a standardized test with a career exploration component. The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education grants special recognition to those students who score in the top five percent of eighth graders nationally. This year, all of the St. John School eighth grade students have been recognized as Oklahoma Scholars.
In addition to these achievements by eighth graders, academic awards were recently given to students in grades 1-8. These awards include 16 recipients of the U.S. President’s Award for Educational Excellence and 29 recipients of the President’s Award for Education Achievement.
The President of the United States and the Secretary of Education honor student achievement and hard work at the completion of elementary school and middle school. Yazmin A, Theresa B, MacKenzie D, Haley G, Ann-Marie H, Trevor J, Hannah O, Xavier S, Laura D, Gabrielle D, Sarah K, Blair K, Jacob M, Dominic P, Logan B, Jessica B, Aubrey C, Ali D, Thomas D, Emma F, Sean H, Cassie M, McKenna R, Jasmine D, Patrick G, Natalie K, Austin R and Caden R received the President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement, which honors students who have demonstrated outstanding educational growth and commitment to their academic subjects in grades 6-8. One student completing elementary school also received this award: Edward Burke.
Another President's Award is given for Outstanding Academic Excellence is given to students at all grade levels who maintain a grade point average of 90% or above throughout their middle school years, and score above the 85th percentile on a standardized test, such as the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. This year’s middle school honorees are Mason C, Anna Gy, Emily Z, Christina R, Lawrence Z, Katie H, Katie K, Susana M, and John T. Students completing elementary school who also received this award are Julia D, Audrey Fr, Abby H, Garrett M, Henry W, Jack W and Karleigh Z
Two of St. John’s seventh grade class qualified for the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP). This program allows qualified seventh graders the opportunity to take the SAT or ACT test earlier than other students, and it continues to follow their educational careers and offers special opportunities to these students. This year’s participants are Thomas D and Lawrence Z
During the school year, students in grades 2-8 take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, a national standardized test. For the third year in a row, St. John School students scored in the 97 th percentile on the Iowa Test.
Each year, St. John School names a recipient of the Annette Delahay Memorial Citizenship Award. “Mrs. Delahay was a beloved member of the St. John community,” said Principal Jane Sears. “She was a St. John parent, coach, and friend. After her unfortunate death in 1996, an award was created to honor her memory.” The award honors the student who demonstrates outstanding leadership, scholarship, Christian love and service. The recipient is chosen by the teachers who work with the eighth grade class and the student’s name is placed on a permanent plaque in the school. The co-recipients of the 2009 Annette Delahay Memorial Citizenship Award are Natalie K and John T.
Athletic awards were also given to select students. The award for Athlete of the Year is given to the middle school student who best exemplifies sportsmanship, commitment, and good conduct on the court and in t he classroom. This year’s Athlete of the Year is Katie K. Katie H and Patrick G received awards for this year’s Most Improved Athletes.
St. John School is already making preparations for the 2009-10 school year. Three new teachers have been added to the staff: Donna Hemphill will return to St. John School as the pre-k teacher. She previous taught at St. John during 2007-08. Cayce Corley will return as middle school math teacher. She also taught at St. John during 2007-08. Finally, the new 1 st grade teacher will be Ashley White, who recently graduated from OSU with a degree in elementary education.
St. John School is a private Catholic school established in 1912 in Bartlesville, OK. The school offers K-8 education to approximately 130 students of all religious faiths. St. John School Welcomes New Teachers for 2009-10 School Year
As St. John School prepares for its 98 th year of educating Bartlesville area youth, it welcomes two teachers who are returning to its faculty, and one teacher new to St. John School . Donna Hemphill will return to St. John School to teach Pre-Kindergarten, and Cayce Corley will return to teach middle school math. Ashley White will be the new 1 st grade teacher.
“Mrs. Hemphill and Mrs. Corley have taught at St. John School in the past, and we are delighted to welcome them back to our school,” said Jane Sears, principal. Hemphill taught pre-k during the 2007-08 school year, and she was instrumental in developing the curriculum and activities for the newly launched pre-k program. In addition to her teaching experience at St. John School, Hemphill has taught pre-k through the Head Start program and through the Bartlesville public school system. She also has a teaching certificate in early childhood development.
Corley also taught during the 2007-08 school year, and after taking a year off to spend more time with her family, including a newborn, she will be returning to the middle school faculty. In addition to teaching at St. John School, Corley taught math and science in Texas for five years.
“For our pre-k and kindergarten grades, we are looking forward to preparing these youngest students for first grade through our early childhood program,” Sears said. “St. John’s early childhood learning program focuses on giving students the tools and learning they need to excel academically, spiritually, emotionally, socially and physically. Our program is geared to fully prepare our students for success throughout their elementary and middle-school years,” said Sears.
Students in pre-k and kindergarten will learn about the world around them in a fun, yet challenging manner. The program uses developmentally-appropriate teaching, and is geared to help each child learn at his or her own pace. Students at all levels are challenged to succeed in a supportive, caring environment.
Mrs. White is a recent graduate of Oklahoma State University, with a degree in elementary education. “I look forward to crafting a safe, caring and constructive classroom,” Mrs. White said. She completed a clinical practice internship at Sangre Ridge Elementary School in Stillwater, teaching in a 2 nd grade classroom. She also has field experience in schools in Stillwater , Tulsa , Berryhill and as a substitute teacher in Bartlesville.
Principal Sears, entering her second year as principal at St. John School, said the school is continuing to offer numerous electives and programs for students in 2009-10. Middle school students will be offered P.E., Spanish, music (instrumental and vocal), art, photography, speech/debate and computer applications/robotics. Elementary students will participate in P.E., music, library, art and Spanish. In addition, students in pre-k and kindergarten learn sign language.
