During the St. John School graduation and awards ceremony, the school honored the 8th grade graduates and recognized many students throughout all the grades for excellence in academic and athletic achievements.
Students graduating from 8th grade are: Laura Davito, Joshua Diaz De Leon, Blair Koster, Christina Reburn, and Manuel Zambrano.
Each year, all 8th grade students participate in the ACT EXPLORE program, a standardized test with a career exploration component. The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education grants special recognition to those students for their collegiate preparedness in the eighth grade based on test scores. This year, all of the St. John School eighth grade students have been recognized as Oklahoma Scholars.
In addition to these achievements by 8th graders, academic awards were given to students in grades 1-8. Eight middle school students received the President’s Award for Educational Excellence (maintaining a 4.0 grade point average) and there were twelve recipients of the President’s Award for Education Achievement (maintaining a 3.5 grade point average).
The President of the United States and the Secretary of Education honor student achievement and hard work at the completion of elementary school and middle school. Elementary students receiving recognition for academic achievement were Ethan Elias, Sydney Glass, Anna Jones, Joseph Korte, Tyler Oprhin, Evan Brown, Mason Dumunceaux, Jarrod Gray, Meghan Martin, Anna Powell, Ethan Sanders, Abram Stewart, and Peyton Winter. Luis Acosta, Jakob Blattler, Zachary Shoemake, Kailey Britt, Edward Burke, Audrey Farr, Bradley Glass, Abigail Hales, Megan Hays, Emily Surdahl, Theresa Burke, and Daylin Gray received the President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement, which honors students who have demonstrated outstanding educational growth and commitment to their academic subjects in grades 5-8.
Outstanding Academic Excellence is given to students at all grade levels who demonstrate excellence in all areas of educational measures. Elementary students receiving this recognition were Julianna Ahlert, Jack Britt, Elena Fries, Ezekeal Maddock, Ethan Silvernail, Joseph Vasseru, Kathryn Clary, William Doenges, Emily Nordhues, Nathan Ramsey, Emily Wetzel, and Liza Williams. This year’s middle school honorees were Spencer Green, Zachary Robertson, Henry Williams, Jack Williams, Anna Gormley, Emily Zhou, Blair Koster, and Christina Reburn.
Two of St. John’s seventh grade class qualified for the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP). This program allows qualified seventh graders the opportunity to take the SAT or ACT test earlier than other students, and it continues to follow their educational careers and offers special opportunities to these students. This year’s participants are Anna Gormley and Emily Zhou. Both girls qualified for state-level recognition.
During the school year, students in grades 2-8 take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, a national standardized test. For the third year in a row, St. John School as a school scored in the 95th percentile on the Iowa Test.
Each year, St. John School names a recipient of the Annette Delahey Memorial Citizenship Award. “Mrs. Delahey was a beloved member of the St. John community,” said Principal Jane Sears. “She was a St. John parent, coach, and friend. After her unfortunate death in 1996, an award was created to honor her memory.” The award honors the student who demonstrates outstanding leadership, scholarship, Christian love and service. The recipient is chosen by the teachers who work with the eighth grade class and the student’s name is placed on a permanent plaque in the school. The recipient of the 2010 Annette Delahey Memorial Citizenship Award is Christina Reburn.
Athletic awards were also given to select students. The award for Athlete of the Year is given to the middle school students who best exemplify sportsmanship, commitment, and good conduct on the court and in the classroom. This year’s Catholic Athletes of the Year is Blair Koster. Edward Burke received an award for this year’s Most Improved Athletes.
