First through Fourth Grades

First through Fourth grade students at St. John School experience a well rounded academic education while participating more fully in the Christian community.

Students receive instruction in core academic subjects as well as Spanish, Computers, Religion, Music, Physical Education, and Art.  The classroom curriculum is supplemented by special events throughout the year including field trips.

The children take part in preparing and participating in the celebration of Mass on Fridays. All faiths are welcome at St. John School.

Students also deepen their faith through regular prayer, worship and Christian service to others.

Academic excellence is a hallmark of St. John School. Class sizes are small in order to ensure each student receives
individual attention and is challenged to the most of his/her abilities.

• Student-to-teacher ratio: 11 to 1.
• Classes are typically 10-14 students.
• Students in grades 2-8 are assessed annually using the standardized Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. Our students score in the 97th percentile nationally.
• More than half of the Class of 2007 qualified for the Duke Talent Identification Program.
• Every year, multiple students earn the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence.
• Students regularly win or place in competitions such as MathCounts, debate and speech, science, chess and more.

St. John enrolls students of all faiths.
The school is located downtown, just two blocks from the ConocoPhilips campus. Parents find it easy to be involved
in their children’s education, volunteer in the classroom, or even eat lunch with their children.

Technology is integrated with the core curriculum for every grade. For example, first graders begin to learn keyboarding skills and create simple Power Point presentations. By the time they reach 8th grade, students
are learning basic programming and using Word, Publisher, Excel and Access programs.
